Parenting is a great privilege. It can be the most rewarding and challenging job you will ever have. The important thing to realize is that you don’t become a parent because you are the most qualified. From the moment that little bundle of joy arrives, most people have questions and self-doubts regarding their parenting skills. Never accept the enemy’s thoughts and feelings of inadequacy. You are divinely appointed by God to parent your children. He will equip you and give you the grace you need to be a great parent.

As a parent, the most important requirement to fulfill is to teach and train your children. God places a lot of emphasis on this.

  • In Psalm 78 God commanded us to teach our children that they might have hope in God.
  • Deuteronomy 6:6-9 instructs us to teach our children when we get up, when we walk throughout our day, when we sit down, and when we lie down.
  • In Proverbs 22:6 we are told to train up our children in the way they should go.
  • Luke 6:40 says that a pupil, when fully taught, will be just like his teacher.

Someone once said, “You can teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are.” Has your child ever done something you didn’t like but then you realized you do that very same thing? You think, I can’t discipline my child for acting that way because I act that way! Ultimately, your children will do what you do, not just what you say.

THE TAKE AWAY

As parents, we have to work at being the best example we can be to our children. That means we have to be growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, becoming more like Him every day.
