Part of growing in favor with God is learning what He has specifically gifted and called us to do on earth.

For your children to know they are gifted and that God has a specific plan for their lives, they need to know some basic foundational truths to build on.

Talking to Your Child

1. God saw you coming and made a plan for you.

You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. Psalm 139:16 NLT

2. You have been set apart.

Before I formed you in the womb I knew [and] approved of you [as My chosen instrument], and before you were born I separated and set you apart, consecrating you; [and] I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 AMP

3. God’s plans for you are good.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

4. We can get the plans for our lives by asking God.

…Call to me and I will answer you. I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never gure out on your own. Jeremiah 33:3 MSG

5. Every child is gifted and his or her gift will never be taken back.

For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn. Romans 11:29 NLT

6. We are to use our gifts to serve others and to earn a living.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:10-11 NIV

Understand: Your gift doesn’t take you to Heaven, Jesus does. Your gift is to use on earth to help others and to help you provide for yourself and your family.

THE TAKE AWAY

Remind your child that he or she is gifted. Your child won’t be good at everything, but he or she will be good at something. Encourage your child in his or her gifts and they will begin to develop.

As we talked about, growing in favor with God is one of four things your child should be developing in. Just like Jesus did, our children are to grow in wisdom, stature, favor with God and favor with man.

The Biblical Parenting 101 series helps parents walk through the process of helping their child grow like Jesus did, no matter what age or stage they’re in.
