A lot of parents quote the scripture to their kids, “Obey your parents” (Ephesians 6:1), but then completely overlook the part that says, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath” (Ephesians 6:4 KJV).
If we expect our children to obey us, then we must also not provoke them to wrath. To keep from doing this, we must establish rules and regulations that lead to rewards for keeping them or punishments for breaking them.
Having a clear set of rules let’s your children know when they’ve crossed a line. Otherwise, if you punish them for a rule they didn’t know existed, they will get upset.
And who can blame them? As an adult, if you get pulled over by a policeman and ticketed for running a stop sign when no stop sign was posted, you’d probably get a little provoked as well! Your children are no different. Consistency is key.
REMEMBER THIS: Discipline without relationship will breed rebellion in the heart of a child.
