Most of us get married without a clue of what marriage is.
It’s something you build; not something you find.
One day you see somebody, and you like the way they look, the way they kiss, the way they talk. “Hey, let’s just get married and spend the rest of our lives sucking the lips off each other’s faces. Won’t that be fun?”
Of course, that’s not what actually happens. Your lips get raw, and you can’t kiss anymore. So you have to start communicating. Then this realization hits you like a ton of bricks, “I don’t think I even like this person.”
Then the devil (who’s a liar) begins to feed you negative thoughts and say, “Yes, you married too late! You married too early! You married the wrong one!”
If you listen to those lies, pretty soon you think, It’s not like I bought them at Wal-Mart. I can’t take her back for a refund or an exchange. What am I going to do now?
Well, the first thing you need to do is stop listening to the devil’s lies. And then you need to realize this, a great marriage does not happen overnight. It takes the determined commitment of two people who are willing to invest time and effort to build a great marriage on purpose.
Marriage is the process by which two ignorant people grow up together, helping one another, becoming friends, and using our unique, God-given strengths to fortify each other’s weaknesses.
So remember, when it comes to marriage, there are no perfect partners. You don’t need a refund or an exchange. That person God has brought into your life is God’s perfect gift for you. Even though you’re two completely unique individuals, God can help you to grow together and build a great marriage and a great future!
