One of the biggest needs of every person in the world is love. And yet, many people don’t have a clue as to what love really is.

Couples begin dating and then fall in love. When they say, “I’m in love,” it’s usually about something they’ve found, and not what is required of them.

Most think of love as something we get, not something we give. As a result, most marriages begin with the “taking” kind of love. Couples haven’t been trained to know what God says about love. The love that God is and demonstrates is the giving kind of love. It’s not based on what He gets in return. That is the same kind of love we are to emulate toward our spouse.

Denise and I began our marriage “in love.” But we really didn’t know what love was. As a result, we didn’t get along and had a really rough time. Then we finally realized, “Hey, God has put us together on purpose. He has a plan for us. We need to stop fighting each other and find out what it is that we’re supposed to be doing.”

I don’t care what’s going on in your marriage today; God has a great plan for you. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “I know the plans I have for you.” Begin looking to God to find out what His plan is for your lives. He’s called you for a purpose to build something great together!

THE TAKE AWAY

Say this: “Change starts with me, not my spouse.” Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-8 in the Amplified version. In verses 4-7, every place where the word “love” is written, insert your name. Read it out loud. Confess, “This is not what I do. This is who I am.”
