1.) Put God first in your life and in your marriage.
Get God in the middle of your relationship if you want it to stay strong.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NLT) A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
2.) Understand that your spouse is someone you serve, and not something you won.
Jesus is our example and He came to serve. Love isn’t a feeling; it’s an action.
Matthew 20:28 (NLT) For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
3.) Read what God’s Word has to say about marriage in Ephesians 5:25-29 and think about ways you can love your spouse the way Jesus loves us.
He loved us when we were unlovable.
Ephesians 5:25-29 (NLT) For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church.
4.) A marriage license doesn’t mean you can say whatever hits your brain.
Speak the truth in love, compliment more than you correct and say what God says about your spouse.
Proverbs 18:21 (NIV) The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
