Parents, believe it or not, planning for your child’s college education is not the most important thing you can do for them.
As important as a college degree may be in helping them become successful in life, the most important thing you can do is train them in the Word of God. We are living in a day when we have to make it a priority to get the Word firmly planted in our kids.
Many people know the story of Abraham and how God called him to be the father of many nations. But do you know why God picked him? It wasn’t because of his great faith, but it was because God knew Abraham would teach his kids to follow God’s ways and commandments. Genesis 18:19 (KJV) says, “For I know him (Abraham), that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord….” In God’s eyes, that was a big prerequisite for the guy who was going to be the “father of many nations.”
God hasn’t changed. And as parents, that’s still something God considers a major requirement. When it came to raising our kids, Denise and I realized that we could make them mind, teach them to say, “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am,” teach them to brush their teeth, clean their room, and do their homework, but if we didn’t teach them the Word of God, they would be an easy target for the devil.
The bottom line is the devil is not afraid of your kid’s clean room, their straight “A” report card, or how great of an athlete they are. What scares the devil is the Word of God and Jesus who lives in them.
I don’t care what their IQ or GPA scores are or how many trophies they’ve won, if our kids don’t have the Word of God rooted and grounded in their heart, the devil will be able to whip them in life.
Parents, make it a top priority to teach your kids the Word of God. If you haven’t been doing this, don’t wait—start today!

When it comes to training your kids in the Word of God, you are the best teacher and example your kids will ever have. If you are a “doer” of the Word, then the chances are your kids will become “doers” also.
Read and find fun ways to practice Deuteronomy 11:18-21 (NLT): “So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine…Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.”
