We wanted each of our six kids to be successful.
So an important principle we had to teach them was, “It’s not about you, baby. When you go to school or go to work, it’s about others. It’s about loving God and loving and helping others.”
God places a lot of emphasis on the value of relationships and living to help others. The greatest relationship scripture in the Bible is John 3:16 (KJV), “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God loved somebody besides Himself. He loved us! And He paid a huge price just to be able to have a relationship with us and to be able to hang out with us for all of eternity. Relationships are a pretty big deal to God.
In Matthew 22:36 the Pharisees asked Jesus, “What is the greatest Law in the commandment?” Without hesitation, He answered, “Well, that’s simple. The first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all of your mind.” But then He added, “There’s also a second law that’s just as important. You need to love your neighbor as you love yourself” (Matthew 22:37-40, paraphrased).
So the entire Law is tied up in these two commandments: love God and love your fellow man. If you want to be successful and have a good life, make sure both of those are top priorities in your life.

The Take Away:
The most important thing you can teach your kids is that life isn’t about “you.” It’s about what you do for others. It’s about relationships. Love God and love others. Be considerate. Put others before yourself. Help people. You’ll find that when you love and help others, God will send people to love and help you.
