As a remarried, newlywed couple, your biggest challenge will be finding the time to nurture your marriage because most of the time you also have an instant family to take care of.

When you come back from the honeymoon, if you even get one, you immediately step into the role of mom and dad—packing lunches, dropping off kids, picking up kids, helping kids with homework, etc. There’s no time for you and your spouse to grow in your relationship first. You both have to hit the ground running.

Nurturing Your Marriage

God knows the importance of a newly married couple having time to grow together and bond. That’s why under the Old Testament law it stated: “If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married” (Deuteronomy 24:5 NIV).

If God knew how important it was to have bonding time together, then you need to make sure that is a priority in your marriage. The survival of your blended family will depend upon it. Realize that it’s not selfish for you to take time out to spend just with your spouse. Developing that bond will not only benefit you and your spouse but will benefit your kids as well. A strong, healthy marriage relationship will produce a strong, healthy family unit.

TAKE AWAY

Schedule date nights with your spouse once a week, even if it’s just to drive to McDonald’s for a cup of coffee and an apple pie. Make time to step away from the kids and the responsibilities of life so that you can bond together. Also, try to take time every couple of months to get a babysitter and get away for a weekend. You’ll be amazed at how taking the time to bond together as husband and wife will positively impact your entire family.
