Obedience is real important to God, and He attaches a lot of benefits to it. Job 36:11 (MEV) says, “If they obey and serve Him, they will spend their days in prosperity and their years in pleasure.” I don’t know of a better scripture to make into a bumper sticker and have plastered on the back of car or stuck on a refrigerator!
God’s Word is like a safety deposit box filled with all kinds of blessings and promises. But there’s a specific key that opens the box. We can’t pick the lock or use another key. We access God’s blessings by using the key of obedience.
THIS IS IMPORTANT: Now, you need to understand that we’re not talking about earning your salvation. We’re talking about obedience to the lordship of Jesus Christ. Salvation is a free gift. You can’t earn or work your way into Heaven. But we can’t profess that Jesus is our Lord and not obey Him. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.
DISOBEDIENCE vs. OBEDIENCE
In 1 Samuel chapter 15 the Bible tells the story of a man who thought God wouldn’t mind if he was a little disobedient as long as he worshipped God. King Saul thought, If I give God a sacrifice, He won’t care that I didn’t do everything He said to do. God won’t mind.
Saul was wrong. God got angry and told the prophet Samuel to tell him, “Which pleases the Lord more: burnt offerings and sacrifices or obeying his commands? It is better to obey the Lord than to offer sacrifices to him” (1 Samuel 15:22 ERV).
Saul thought he could substitute sacrifice, or worship, for obedience. However, there is no “skeleton key” and no way to “jimmy the lock” to access God’s blessings. Obedience is the key to unlocking the blessings of God!
