“The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Matthew 7:25 NIV).
It’s a proud parent moment when your child takes first place in a piano recital or brings home a trophy from a sporting event. Gifts and talents are a good thing and the Bible says they’ll “make room for you” (Proverbs 18:16), which means they’ll open doors of opportunity and blessing.
However, great talent and ability won’t get our kids into Heaven; only Jesus can do that. And it won’t keep the devil from trying to steal, kill, or destroy them. Only faith and a solid foundation in God’s Word will enable them to whip the devil and overcome the challenges that will come their way. And although they may really enjoy the talent they have, whether it’s playing football, singing, ballet, etc., it won’t bring them eternal happiness because only the joy of the Lord can do that.
From a natural standpoint, our kids’ talents might open doors and take them far in life, but spiritually, they’ll only be as strong as the Word foundation that has been built inside of them. If that foundation is built on sand, the devil can cause all of their natural success to come tumbling down around them. But if it’s built on the rock of the Word of God, they’ll stand solid and strong no matter what is happening around them.
THE TAKE AWAY
Parents, as much time as we invest in our kids helping them to develop their talents by taking them to practices, recitals, and competitions, let’s also make sure we get the Word of God in them. Let’s make sure to feed them a good, healthy diet of God’s Word, and let’s raise our kids to be smart, talented, godly world changers!
