“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52 KJV).

I want my kids to grow in wisdom. Why?

Because wise kids live long, they have the ability to become wealthy, and they’re more apt to be promoted to leadership positions and have a broader scope of influence. And that means they can do a lot of good for a lot of people. I want my kids to be godly influences everywhere they go and live happy, successful lives.

Kids don’t come with a “wisdom gene” that kicks in when they’re born or even when they turn 20. Wisdom is developed. Even Jesus had to increase in wisdom. Kids do dumb stuff until they learn that dumb stuff can hurt them and even kill them. How many times have you watched the show America’s Funniest Videos and seen a kid on a skateboard try to do a trick off of a homemade ramp that was put together with plywood and duct tape and almost break his neck? Kids aren’t born “wise.” They have to learn wisdom.

Moms and Dads, in order to train your kids to be wise, you have to be wise. Kids learn the most by what they see, and many times you’re the ones they watch the most. You can’t blame your kids for doing dumb stuff if you do dumb stuff yourself. Remember, what you do speaks louder than what you say.

THE TAKE AWAY

Take time as a family to read through the book of Proverbs in a translation that your kids can understand. The book of Proverbs is filled with scriptures on what wisdom is, what wise people do, and how to be wise. Pick scriptures on wisdom to memorize and make up games or give prizes to encourage them to learn. Make learning God’s Word fun for your kids!
