I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Pride goes before a fall.”
It doesn’t take long for a bragger to wear out their welcome. Have you ever been around someone who, no matter what you say, is always trying to “one-up” you? You talk about something, and they always have to tell their story, which somehow is always much bigger and better and blows your story out of the water.
A great principle to live by is to never think of yourself as so successful, talented, popular, or powerful that you forget that it’s God who is giving you your next breath. The Bible says in Acts 17:25 (NIV) that God “himself gives everyone life and breath.”
No matter what we achieve, we need to remember that without God we can do nothing. And we need to honor Him by thanking Him for everything He does in our lives.
Teach your kids to always be dependent on God. Teach them to be humble, to honor God, and to thank Him. God said in 1 Samuel 2:30 (NIV), “Those who honor me I will honor….” When we continue to acknowledge our dependence on God, recognizing Him as our source for all things and honoring Him, then He will honor us and cause blessing to flow into our lives.
THE TAKE AWAY
Start teaching your kids to be thankful when they’re young. A good way to teach them might be to have them make a list of things they’re thankful for. Then, verbally pray with them and teach them to give God thanks for each thing on their list. Instill in your kids a heart of thanksgiving for even the smallest things in their lives.
