I tried to teach my children when they were young that they were to be givers.

The Bible says, “God gives seed to the sower” (Isaiah 55:10; 2 Corinthians 910).  It also says in Galatians 6:7 (KJV), “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

This is God’s law, and the earlier we start teaching these principles to our kids the better. If we don’t, then when they grow up, they’ll stay in debt all their lives. They will always be struggling to make ends meet. They’ll be using an old, broken frying pan and driving a beat-up old car.

It’s not enough to just work hard and keep everything to ourselves. The only way we can beat this world’s system and the devil is by getting on God’s financial plan, which is a plan of giving. Once we hit that path, there is nothing that can stop God from giving back to us.

Great scriptures to teaching your children about giving:

Yes, God will give you much so that you can give away much, and when we take your gifts to those who need them they will break out into thanksgiving and praise to God for your help. So, two good things happen as a result of your gifts—those in need are helped, and they overflow with thanks to God.

II Corinthians 9:11-12 TLB

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Galatians 6:7

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Luke 6:38

Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again.

Ecclesiastes 11:1 NIV

A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

Proverbs 11:25 NIV

The sluggard’s craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work. All day long he craves for more, but the righteous give without sparing.

Proverbs 21:25-26 NIV

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.

Proverbs 22:9 NIV

THE TAKE AWAY

Train your kids to be givers. Most kids have an over-abundance of toys that haven’t been touched in months. Have them pick out toys to give away and not the broken ones. Teach them that if they want to receive the best, they need to give their best.

For your donation of any amount this month to the Fighting for Families radio outreach, we’ll send you a copy of Joe’s practical, yet powerful book Family Finances.
