“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10-11 NIV)
Each one of us has been given a gift. It doesn’t matter how old you are, or if you still don’t know what yours is. God has called you and equipped you.
Here’s a picture of me at four years old. From a very early age well into my college years, I was afraid of two things: public speaking and flying on airplanes.
In my mid-20s I re-committed my life to God and began studying His Word like I had never done before. It was during this time that God showed me what He had for me to do. It included public speaking and flying on airplanes – a lot.
Don’t let your current circumstances limit what you allow God to do in your life.
THE PROCESS OF FINDING YOUR GIFT
God can use natural things to help you discover your gifts. I remember the first time I went through a job layoff. The plant I worked at shut down. I needed another job, so I went to the unemployment office. I said, “I need a job.”
They said, “First we’d like for you to take a test, so we can find out what you like, what you’re good at, what your natural abilities are.”
I said, “A test? I don’t want a test. I want a job.”
They said, “Well, we can’t give you a job until you take a test.”
So, I took a test. About thirty minutes after I finished, a man came out with the results. He said, “Mr. McGee, we recommend that you look for a job in one of these three areas. Please stay away from everything else.”
For the first time in my life somebody helped me to find out what I was good at! It wasn’t a “thus saith the Lord,” but it gave me direction and helped me to narrow down a long list of vocational options to those that I would be good at, and therefore be successful in. It also confirmed to me that I actually had specific gifts and talents! That test set me on a course and is part of the reason I’m doing the work I am today.
