For our children, memorizing scripture is more than a Sunday School activity.
It’s necessary for them to successfully establish a relationship with their Heavenly Father. It helps them begin to understand His character.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
God’s Word is the weapon they will have against their enemy, the devil.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
Knowing God’s Word is the only way they will be able to obey it and we are commanded to obey.
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11 (ESV)
Part of the instructions in God’s Word tell us very clearly that we are to know, study, and meditate on God’s Word regularly.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Joshua 1:8 (ESV)
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)

THE TAKE AWAY
Start with a single scripture. Write them out on 3×5 cards or get a set ready made. Try one a week. Talk about it. Read it with your child. Help them with their memorization. Explain to them why it’s important that they know this.
