Have you ever heard the saying that you can’t give what you don’t have?

It’s true. 

If you don’t have this one quality  your spouse, your children, your co-workers, and anyone you come in contact with will be in trouble.



In Matthew 22:39 Jesus said the second greatest commandment is to “love your neighbor as yourself.” The kicker to this is that each of us has to look in the mirror and ask, “Do I love me?” If I can’t love and accept who I am, then I can’t love and accept anyone else.

As a parent, if you don’t have a good sense of self-worth, you won’t be able to instill that in your children. If you base your self-worth on external things, like material possessions, status, or talent, you will pass down those same values to your children.

We must value and love ourselves based on what God says about us and who He has made us to be on the inside. He doesn’t love and value us because of what we have to offer or because we’re perfect. In fact, Romans 5:8 (NLT) says, “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

We were sinners with nothing to offer, but that didn’t change how valuable we were to God! Bottom line, you and your kids are valuable because God says you’re valuable!

You can’t give what you don’t have. If you don’t love and value yourself, you won’t be able to instill those traits in your kids. Take time to meditate on who God says you are. Build your sense of self-worth by reading the scriptures in the Word of God that talk about who you are in Christ.

You build your sense of self-worth (and help your child build theirs) by reading God’s Word. You don’t have to do everything in a single day. Start small. Read a scripture or a chapter in Proverbs.

It’s not about “knowing the entire Bible” so you can get credit for it, it’s about getting the living Word of God in your heart.
